WHAT DO WE NEED TO BRING?

MOST GEAR AND EQUIPMENT IS PROVIDED FOR YOU.  YOU ARE ONLY BE REQUIRED TO BRING YOUR PERSONAL ITEMS & GEAR (CLOTHES, SLEEPING BAG & REST PAD, FISHING GEAR, ETC...).  A COMPLETE PACKING LIST WILL BE SENT UPON TRIP REGISTRATION.   

WE DO NOT PROVIDE BACKPACKS FOR OVERNIGHT BACKPACKING TRIPS.  

WHAT DOES MAINE TRAILS GUIDE SERVICE PROVIDE?

WE PROVIDE MOST OF THE GEAR & EQUIPMENT YOU WILL NEED FOR YOUR TRIP

FOR MAXIMUM DURABILITY & STABILITY ON THE WATER, WE USE OLD TOWN DISCOVERY 169 OR PENOBSCOT 17 CANOES.  WE ALSO PROVIDE LIFE VESTS, EMERGENCY THROW ROPES, FIRST AID KITS & PADDLES.

WE OFFER CLIENTS TOP QUALITY 4-PERSON EUREKA OUTFITTER TENTS OR L.L. BEAN 4-PERSON DOME TENTS, ALONG WITH GROUND CLOTHES FOR EXTRA PROTECTION.

WE PROVIDE HEALTHY AND HEARTY MEALS, MOST COOKED TRADITIONALLY OVER AN OPEN FIRE OR IN A DUTCH OVEN.  WE ARE ALWAYS ADDING NEW AND INTERESTING MEALS TO OUR MENUS, AND WE ALWAYS ACCOMMODATE THOSE WITH DIETARY CONCERNS.

WE PROVIDE OUR CLIENTS WITH DRY BAGS FOR THEIR PERSONAL GEAR, AND WE CARRY ALL OF OUR FOOD ITEMS IN ANIMAL PROOF YORK BOXES, COOLERS AND PORTAGE BARRELS.  

HOW DO WE GET TO THE WATERWAY OR TRAILHEAD? 

WE PROVIDE COMFORTABLE TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM THE WATERWAY OR TRAILHEAD IN OUR 15 PASSENGER VAN, COMPLETE WITH AIR CONDITIONING AND COMFORTABLE SEATS.   

WHERE DO WE MEET OUR GUIDES TO START OUR TRIP?

ON MOST TRIPS WE PICK YOU UP AT THE MOTEL/HOTEL WHERE YOU ARE STAYING IN NORTHERN MAINE.  WE MEET YOU THERE, ALLOWING TIME TO PACK & LOAD YOUR PERSONAL GEAR, AND THEN WE DRIVE TO THE  WATERWAY OR TRAIL TO BEGIN THE TRIP.  WHEN THE TRIP IS OVER, WE RETURN YOU DIRECTLY TO YOUR VEHICLE.

ON OCCASION, WE WILL MEET CLIENTS AT OUR HOME IN MOUNT VERNON AND DRIVE TO NORTHERN MAINE TOGETHER.

HOW ARE THE BUGS?

GENERALLY, IT DEPENDS ON THE TIME OF YEAR THAT YOU TRAVEL IN MAINE.  IN THE SPRING, THE MONTHS OF MAY & JUNE CAN BE DIFFICULT AT TIMES, SO TAKING PRECAUTIONS WITH PLENTY OF BUG SPRAY & REPELLANT WILL BE IMPORTANT.  LATER IN THE SUMMER, JULY AND AUGUST, THE BUGS SEEM TO SETTLE DOWN AND IT IS USUALLY MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE TO TRAVEL IN THE WILDERNESS

WILL WE SEE A LOT OF ANIMALS ON OUR TRIP?

ON MOST TRIPS WE SEE PLENTY OF WILDLIFE, MUCH OF IT ON THE RIVER WHEN PADDLING.  MOOSE ARE FREQUENTLY SEEN FEEDING IN THE WATER AT DAYBREAK AND AT DUSK, BUT IT IS NOT UNCOMMON TO SEE THEM AT ANY TIME OF DAY.  WE USUALLY SEE BALD EAGLES, WHITE TAIL DEER, BEAVER, SNOWSHOE HARES, MANY DIFFERENT BIRD SPECIES, AND IF WE'RE LUCKY, A MAINE BLACK BEAR. 

HOW DO FAMILY MEMBERS CONTACT US IN AN EMERGENCY?

BEFORE EACH TRIP YOU ARE PROVIDED WITH AN EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION SHEET THAT YOU CAN LEAVE WITH LOVED ONES.  IT INLCUDES PHONE NUMBERS & CONTACT DETAILS FOR THE WATERWAY OR BAXTER PARK, MAINE WARDEN SERVICE, AS WELL AS THE MAINE STATE POLICE.
